Pesticides Management bill 2020 is a watershed for the Indian Agrochemical Industry. Therefore, to deep dive into ground realities, consultations with industry, academia, area specialists and think tanks on Pesticides Management bill 2020 took place at The Claridges, New Delhi on 8th October 2021. Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Sh. Narendra Singh Tomar was the chief guest for this event. During these deliberations, it was recognised by CEPR that there are still some issues that need to be addressed and points of contention that need to be resolved in PMB 2020 for India to become a credible manufacturer and supplier of pesticides, not just for the world also domestically. A few issues and suggestions expressed during this roundtable were about protecting indigenous manufacturing, Registration of technicals, Data exclusivity and patent evergreening in agrochemicals, registration and review process, safety in manufacturing and distribution etc. The speakers held a staunch belief that identifying and leveraging the empty spaces and the Growth potential in this industry will bring us closer, not only to our goals of Doubling Farmer Income, but will also presents to us an opportunity to recalibrate our Policy. This recalibration will assuredly bring us multiple steps closer to harnessing our full potential in this sector, both domestically and globally and towards contributing significantly to India’s goal of $5 trillion Economy by
2025. Sh. Narendra Tomar reiterated his support for both, The Annadata and The Industrialists of India and adopting a reformist and democratic approach to issues that affect them directly. He finally, emphasised that reforms are a stepping stone towards self-reliance and assured to move forward in unison with the stakeholders by taking into account all the suggestions on PMB 2020.
